BIOGRAPHY
I`ve been asked to write something about Uzrujan. Fuck, Uzrujan is a band
i`m in, and although i wrote many reviews and articles about other peoples
music i think this is a hardest task for me ever.
Anyhow here is what i know.
Uzrujan consists of 3 persons playing various instruments: gutars, bass
guitar, drums, percussion, electronics, acordian, violin, clarinet, whatever
we find arround us and produces some sound....
We started to play music together about year and a half ago. We all played
and are still playing in some other bands. Bruno Vidovic;, drummer, drums
in Peach Pit. Sven Pavlovic; playes in few other bands (Rujan, Projekt:Projekt,
Random), in some of them with me (Rujan, Random, Sibir).
Well, we all like different styles of music, i mean we all like all of
them, from free jazz to "rock", avant, post something, minimalism,
contemporary music,... whatever...
What we felt was that other bands we are in are pretty much "song"
orientired. You know, strict song structure and stuff... What we wanted
to do with our music was to concentrate more on "certain feel"
music can takes us to. To do "movies" or "pictures",
certain ambient with our music weather it`s plesant or not. Anyhow we
didn`t wanted our music to be "background" music many bands
are doing today. So i suppose that is the reason some people will never
get used to what we do. Anyhow, we start with improvisations, and after
some time parts just "click" together the way we like it. Though
all of the parts are still "open enough" to give us oportunity
to go with the music in direction we feel going to....
We shared stage with Storm&Stress, Flying Luttenbachers, Chris Cutler,
Shock Exchange, Boris Kovac... All of them said they liked our music a
lot (we hope they didn`t lie), we certainly like theirs...
Sometimes we have guest musitians playing with us, we play way to much
in our hometown, we lack hair on our heads, and we wear hats on cold days...

UZRUJAN
PRESS
"...Here
we are talking about a band who explores big "nobody's" land
often called avantguard/experimental music. Band who shares same approach
to music as Gastr Del Sol, Brise Glace, Storm and Stress, even U.S.Maple
& Dutch Harbor/Boxhead Ensemble... If you like here mentioned bands
it is not clever to miss UZRUJAN...
Members of this band uses various instruments & samples to ride their
soundscapes...
Leading you to exotic unexplored places deep under water or far cold north,
on hidden beach, untached caves.......
Nervous or better said Disturbed (which is right translation of their
name to english) guitars underlined with un/pleasent noise and strange
rhythms with slight free jazz feel (clarinet brings this to mind) are
telling you exciting story with melancholic end. After seeing them live
I can easely say (using "sport speach") - if we put UZRUJAN
in boxing ring with any other band mentioned above it would be hard and
exciting fight with uncertain final score... " D.Blazevic
"...Not
really disturbed (traslation of their name to english), but oposite, calm
& clearheaded, this deadly sirious technitians are preparing ground
for their halfhour long rides, rides during which everything becomes possible...
Discipline in repetition helps them to widen their sound on a whole body
liberating universe... Improvisation in their music stays within limits,
allows frame for their sound painting to exist and not in the same time.
Simply said Uzrujan is cure for contradictions, glue wich glues contradictions
together into a consistant metter.Their music has more similarities with
avantguard music from 1st half of the century then with contemporary rock
music. Sound panel of this guys can only be described with wide list of
artists... From melancholic sundscapes to free jazz bursts of noise &
energy. From Slintalike sudden silent/loud approach to Gastr Del Sol nervous
guitar fingerpicking. All this "influences" are used just as
spices, not as a central idea of their really unique sound approach.Thier
world is democracy, but democracy without unusefull & damaging compromises.
Uzrujan is neither modern neither oldfashioned, Uzrujan is simply and
absolutly CONTEMPORARY. In loss of better term their music could be labeled
as Amibient Concretism... " ZH
"postjazz
chamber music Uzrujan (Disturbed) plays in smoky clubs of Zagreb its experimental
music on old synths, minimal drum-set and simple guitars. They project
the time onto the wall and they keep it stuck there. And then they jump
it over. They like the jazz masters of the Chicago School, the rough soundsaxophones,
but don`t forget where their seed was rooted at..." dr Marias,
Big Ear festival
Part of review
of Earwing jazz festival:"Uzrujan also played, and their performance
was more then solid. Guitarplayers who dialogued their "anemic"
and minimalistic "melody" lines leaned in the same amount on
european school of improvisation as well as on japanese furious style.
They play with the drummer in the middle. His Hiperactive style of playing
broke static scene of gutarplayers sitting and helped them to easier comunicate
w/the public. And the public responded."

JULLANDER
John Symmes' Welt (cd)
After
a couple of 7" and one 10", Jullander finally arrive
to a full length.
Musically, John Symmes Welt consists of four equal,
but distinct voices that complement each other and yet allow each other
to be heard. You can sense that the people here have made an agreement
and set off on a common path.
With two guitars, a bass and drums, Jochen Brandt, Arne Kittler, Andi
Schoon and Jens-Rainer Berg conceive and mold their songs, with occasional
support on saxophone by Philip Andernach.
Jullander play beautiful music that is perfectly aware of itself.
Their calmer pieces with strange melody lines can remind you sometimes
on Dianogah or Couch, others, somewhat bulkyer brings to
mind June of 44 or Paul Newman, but don't even think that
this is enough to describe their sound.
Their sound is really their own - unique melodies, stylish singing, jazz
skillfulness and pop qualities you shouldn't miss.
